Appy-poly-logies if this has already been covered to death, but I haven't been around these parts much lately.

I ought to be ashamed to admit that I bought a CD from Starbucks, but this one caught my eye a couple weeks ago and I finally picked it up this morning.

The title is self-explanatory: it's all covers of songs from 1970, most of them big hits, but also including New Speedway Boogie. I decided not to cut this guy any slack and went straight to the NSB and was quite pleasantly surprised by how good it is. My only complaint (minor) is, as this review points out, he sounds a bit TOO much like Elvis Costello most of the time. But that aside, and in spite of the fact that it's blatantly marketed to our collective Boomer nostalgia, it's a fun little CD.

You can find video of him doing "Wild World," but this link is just to a short review of the CD. Sorry about the pop-up. I tried to find something on a site that didn't have any, but had no luck:

I take it all back - this CD sucks, except for New Speedway Boogie and No Matter What, it's elevator music. If you get a chance to hear those two, though, they are pretty darned good.

You picked it up and saw that he covered that horrible Bread tune Make It With You and you expected more than elevator music? Perhaps we should not go for the extra shot of espresso in that latte......

Yeah, you got me there! I didn't spot the David Gates cover until after purchasing. Or the John Lennon, which I must say is simply an atrocity, ditto Into The Mystic.

I obviously should have drunk the coffee FIRST. I will maintain, though, that New Speedway is kind of interesting, they re-cast it with a Daniel Lanois-ish spooky feel and it's got some really nice drumming in it. Still, probably not even that is worth hearing more than once or twice ... the rest, as you already surmised, is pure shite.

Thank God for Wawa.We don't even have to venture into Starbucks in these parts.
